Notes on the Palm.
Pic of Palm Pilot

The cult of Palm.
It just makes sense. Powered by the Motorola DragonBall processor, it is powerful computing in a small package. It is intuitive to use and portable, with a writing area that takes as input a modified form of handwriting called Graffiti, a fairly easy to learn "shorthand" that allows you to enter information into it with a stylus. It can go anywhere and there are hundreds of applications available for it. It's much more than just an organizer.

Software.
What can you do with a Pilot? Besides being an ergonomic, well thought out gizmo for organizing your thoughts, schedule to dos, etc., the Pilot runs third party software written for it. One of my favorite sites for Pilot Software is The PilotZone, whom I trust since the site is maintained by the folks who run Tucows. The reviews are impartial and the software is usually stable. There are lots of other good sites though. Here's a short list, in no particular order, with my biased commentary, taken from my swollen bookmark file:

  • EuroCool
Excellent selection of over 900 shareware and freeware applications for the Palm. Unfortunate name.
  • PalmPilotGear HQ
A great clearinghouse of Palm Software and info. My one complaint about these guys is that they don't distribute much freeware.
  • Ray's PalmCentral Software Archive.
Fast site with fast downloads, even though the wee size of most Pilot software makes it a speedy download from just about anywhere.
  • Hands High Software for your PalmPilot
Another commercial developer for the Palm, with a pretty cool add-on to the built in memo-pad called Memo PLUS. When I have $14.95 burning a hole in my pocket, I'm going to buy this.
  • $ Kingpin - L0phtPilot $
As cool as commercial software may be, some of the best tools are, and should be free. L0pht Heavy Industries, the security and hacking activists of the 'net, has a small showcase of development for the Palm.
  • Joe's Pilot Software
Interesting and free software, including a freeware image viewer. I keep meaning to give this a shot.

Pilots and UNIX
Microsoft desktops have an easy go of synchronizing their Pilots and importing/exporting information. Non-MS folks have to work a little harder, but it's definitely getting easier.

  • Pilot HOWTO for Linux
The definitive reference for making your Pilot play nicely with your Linux box. I have used the pilot-link software since I first bought my Pilot, and it has worked flawlessly. I just successfully compiled MakeDoc for my Linux machine as well, with a little help. MakeDoc is the utility that will convert text files to Palm compatible ones.
  • PilotManager
I have not had time to work on this, but it is supposed to be a very good graphical overlay to the pilot-link system and allowing greater functionality.
  • KPilot Homepage
The KPilot is supposed to be another nifty graphical Pilot interface. It's another one I haven't had time to work with, but I have heard it is very good. It's based on the K Desktop Environment, a really attractive window manager for X.
  • Dave Strout's Pages
Dave's got the Linux HOWTOs in *.prc format.

Cool Stuff for the future of Palm.
Development for Palm Pilots is moving fast due to the Pilot's superior design and an inspired hacker community. Here's a sampling of some of the best I've come across.

E-Docs
Electronic books and newspapers are definitely one of the killer applications of Palm computing. Read a book anywhere, download current news.

  • Palm Pilot Papers
Links to various news and entertainment sites that are updated every day. The sites' content is then converted to *.prc files that you can read with your Pilot and a document reader, like TealDoc, which while it isn't free, is by far the best document reader available.
  • PalmPilot Entertainment Zone
Electronic comics, anime, images and more can be found at P.E.Z.
  • The PilotNewspaper
Have a newspaper sent to you each day with just the content you specify. Way cool idea. I still can't get it to mail the paper at exactly the right time, though.
  • Daily News for the Pilot
Another Pilot newspaper site. This one uses Yahoo's news instead of Reuters.
  • WebGEMS: E-Text
If it is gravitas you seek in your Palm reading, you will find it here. Think how 21st century cool it is to be reading Machiavelli on your Pilot at work.
  • In The Rain's PalmPilot Library
    Palm reading material for grownups.
  • pilot.screwdriver.net
A utility that converts the text (and optionally, images) into Palm friendly format. I use it with the developer.com reference library and download a new chapter of a tutorial or reference each week. Very handy when traveling. As a matter of fact, you can
convert This Page to Pilot DOC Format
convert this page to Pilot DOC Format!
  • MemoWare
Technical and light reading for your Palm Pilot, as well as databases (many in JFile format) that you may find handy.

General Palm Knowledge
There is no shortage of sites dedicated to the Palm and other PDAs. Here's a sampling.

Stuff to buy.
I guess there will never be enough stuff to buy, and Palm Pilots are no exception. I'm still partial to lean and mean Pilots, though.
